Fans can see old matches for nostalgia but live action is what they want: Sunil Gavaskar

Former India opener Sunil Gavaskar has made it clear that live sports is not happening anytime soon and it would take at least 4 to 5 months for things to get back to normal.

Talking to India Today’s Rajdeep Sardesai on Monday the Indian legend said that the halt in sport is not only difficult for the players but also for those who follow it.

The way things are going we might not be able to see any live sport for maybe 4-5 months. That’s gonna be tough not just on the current players but also those who follow sport,” Gavaskar opined.

Sunil Gavaskar added that the old matches are good to bring back certain amount of nostalgia but live sports is what everyone is waiting for.

“There are so many fans of different sports. for them to be able to only look at the old action after a time it gets boring, for nostalgia you can go back and see what happened earlier but actually you wanna see live sport be it on tv or ground and for that not being able to be seen till September that’s a worrying thing and I am pretty certain that the officials of all the sports and are planning plan a, b, c to get over this period of uncertainty,” Gavaskar asserted.

The 70-year-old also talked about the possibility of closed door matches. There have been talks about organising IPL and even T20 World Cup matches behind closed doors and current as well as former players have voiced their opinion over it.

Sunil Gavaskar didn’t mince word and said that option of closed door matches has to be the last resort. He went on to add that even players want someone to appreciate them just like artists, who want to see a fill-house crowd in the theatre.

“I think that’s gonna be absolutely the last resort otherwise you know when you can’t have absolutely anyone at the ground only then you should play without crowds. Every performer likes to perform in front of a crowd which appreciates the skills and temperament. Same in theatre. So i think it’s not going to be easy on the performers as well. Players also want to do the high fives and hugs.”

Vaccines are the solution according to the the former genius batsman to bring the crowd back to the stadiums. He said without a proper assurance no one will feel comfortable in the ground as any can be infected from the novel coronavirus.

“The only solution that i can think of is the vaccine being discovered very very quickly. If that happens maybe we might be able to get some fans in the stands by the end of the year. We are still about 7 months away so it’s still possible to do so. But you don’t even know who does not have the Covid-19. You could be sitting at 10 feet away from somebody but something can still be transferred. I mean even if you go to the ground and be sitting at a fair distance you won’t have the sense of comfort that you’d feel unless you were certain you are safe,” Gavaskar said.

Number of sports events across the world have either been cancelled or postponed in the wake of coronavirus. Wimbledon was cancelled a few weeks aways, football fixtures in England have been postponed until indefinite time, Tokyo Olympics have got postponed until 2021.

In cricket, South Africa’s tour of Sri Lanka was recently postponed and the cash-rich league IPL has been postponed till further notice and a suitable window for the tournament is being explored
