Tennis great Roger Federer said it would have been easy for him to have retired after being sidelined from the rest of the season following multiple knee surgeries in 2020.

However, Federere believes he still has it in him to continue playing but insists he will take time to get back in “good shape”.

Federer, winner of 20 Grand Slams, said he knows that retirement is not far away but that he is willing to be patient and keep working.

Federer has not played competitive tennis since his defeat in the semi-final of the Australian Open to Novak Djkovic. He said he will be able to return only in 2021 after undergoing a second surgery on his knee surgery in June.

“I know that the time to retire is getting closer and closer and I think I will miss the circuit very much. I must be patient and keep working. It would be easy to have retired at this juncture, but I want to continue giving myself the opportunity to enjoy tennis,” Federer told German newspaper Zeit.

“I will take some time to get back in good shape.”

Federer, who went without a major for 4 years, roared back to form in 2017, winning the Australian Open and the Wimbledon. He defended his Australian Open title in 2018 but hasn’t managed to win a major since. He reached the final of Wimbledon last year only to lose to Djokovic.

We had great duels but always had mutual respect: Federer on Nadal

Meanwhile, Federer has opened up about his equation with Rafael Nadal, saying the two have mutual respect despite the fierce on-field rivalry over the years.

“When I met him, he surprised me because he was very shy off the court and you saw him compete… and the aggressiveness with which he played was incredible,” Federer said.

“There was a lot of rivalry between us and sometimes it was not easy. We had great duels, but we always had We respected each other and knew that we were references for many people and represented our beloved sport.

“Our families get along very well, we always congratulate each other on the triumphs.”
